WAFAQ - 'Liberation Corpse' EP
(Hawar press)
Emerging from a shared sense of anger and defiance, Wafaq is an anonymous band hailing from the city of Padang. They bring a unique blend of HC/Punk with infusions of Blackened/Death, D-Beat, Raw, and Sludge. The band consists of four enigmatic members who go by the aliases Ghoul (vocals), Obayda (drums), Syaitonirojeem (vocals & guitar), and Gulzar (bass). On May 15th, in commemoration of the 76th anniversary of Nakba, Wafaq dropped their latest EP, “Liberation Corpse.” This EP is a raw and powerful narrative that delves into the resistance of Gaza's people against Zionist forces and also sheds light on the internal conflicts among the Palestinian populace, which tragically have claimed thousands of lives. Prior to this release, Wafaq had already given us a taste of their ferocity with a Raw Demo featuring two tracks from the EP.
Wafaq isn’t just any band; they are a force of nature, an embodiment of the relentless spirit of resistance and rebellion. Their music is a visceral experience, blending the unyielding aggression of hardcore punk with the dark, haunting tones of blackened death metal. The addition of D-Beat and sludge elements gives their sound a raw, gritty edge that sets them apart in the underground music scene.
The band members, shrouded in mystery, have adopted pseudonyms that reflect their rebellious personas. Ghoul’s guttural vocals resonate with raw emotion and fury, while Obayda’s drumming provides a thunderous backbone to their sound. Syaitonirojeem’s dual role as vocalist and guitarist brings a chaotic energy, and Gulzar’s bass lines add depth and heaviness to their music. “Liberation Corpse” is not just an EP; it’s a manifesto. Each track is a poignant commentary on the plight of the Gazan people, capturing the essence of their struggle against oppression. The lyrics are a potent mix of anger and sorrow, reflecting the harsh realities of life in a conflict zone.

IMPLODERS - Imploders
(The seats of piss records)
Hailing from Toronto, Imploders long awaited debut 12" follows on the work laid out on their self titled 7" and Equalizing Distort radio session cassette. Their Self-Titled debut 12" is comprised of 16 tracks of pure, classic American Hardcore attack. Maladjusted adults carving out knuckle-burning, drywall-holing Punk Rock. Like their initial release, it travels a similar path first cleared by Circle Jerks and Zero Boys but there's a sheen in the efficiency and tightness of this offering that builds on that prior work. The tracks are scaled for an equal ratio of hooks and speed. Not relying purely on power or flash, Imploders sit right in the middle and are delivering some of the best Hardcore Punk since Personality Crisis walked the frozen plains of the Prairies. This style ain't broke and Imploders prove it doesn't require any fixing. Officially reissue on tapes by The seats of piss records.

LAGRIMAS / HABAK - Split
(Distort Records)
LAGRIMAS and HABAK hail from Los Angeles and Tijuana respectively and deal in politically charged, DIY rooted emotional hardcore that empowers this split release with a refreshing clarity of intent.
Both bands blend viscerally cathartic hardcore with passages of haunting melody, and harsh, roared vocals with sombrely engaging spoken word. However, they harness these base attributes quite distinctly.
LAGRIMAS’ four songs are brutally fierce, tightly honed eruptions investigating themes of urban financialisation (‘I grew up in this city, this is my home, soon I will not be able to live here’) and gentrification (‘our poverty is a crime’) in Los Angeles, together with the economic exploitation of marginalised communities (‘they know they’re exploiting me, they call them a success’) that further fuels this social cleansing of the city.
In contrast, HABAK’S two Spanish-language contributions are more expansive as they fuse their crust-tinged hardcore with beautifully evocative post-metal. Deploying the spectral imagery of an ever-expanding desert, they explore the impact of capitalist expropriation (‘little more than rest can be yearned for in the empire of nothing’) and finding ways to survive it (‘to look for the devices that allow us to turn frustration into a creative passion’) - (Foundation Vinyl)

MISANTHROPIC - Catharsis
(Distort Records)
MISANTROPIC are back. You know what to expect: fast d-beat and double bass drums, metallic thrashing punked up riffs, bulldozing bass lines and angry pissed off vocals. A hardcore holocaust. Think High On Fire, Resistant Culture, Black Tusk, Sanctum and Kylesa; and the classic sounds of: Doom, Deviated Instinct, Anti-Cimex, Discharge and company. This stuff just reeks of circle pits and chaos, it’s as much classic FU hardcore as it is Grind/Death/Thrash metal. For intense riff-a-holics like myself, fed up with the Idiocracy also known as the human race, this is the anger management program that your surrounding companions have been pleading with you to get involved in. In this tumultuous album you get to throw your blows, scream obscenities at the top of your lungs, and destroy things without ever having to be held legally accountable for your actions. Rebels rejoice and Fucking make some noise!

NUCLEAR DEATH TERROR - Chaos Reigns (Distort Records)
The Danish entry into the d-beat, crust-metal field, Nuclear Death Terror (such a thrash metal name) do their best job at blending in on Chaos Reigns. A compilation of ten songs from the band’s various vinyl releases, Chaos Reigns has limited range and even more limited ideas, but that’s the approach to take when you’re operating in a crowded field with several like-minded bands. Really, there’s only thing to do if you’re a band like Nuclear Death Terror – put your head down and rage.
More metal than they’re probably given credit for, NDT find the sweet spot between Bolt Thrower’s war thump and the seminal crust of Amebix and of course, Discharge. When the floodgates open on “Crisis,” it’s time to batten down the proverbial hatches, for Chaos Reigns doesn’t let up. Granted, it’s not supposed to, so we’re treated to variations of the same theme that fellow Southern Lord acts Wolfbrigade, Martyrdod, Enabler, and Heartless have trotted over the last 12 months. Coincidence? Probably not. Southern Lord is probably trying to corner the market for crusty and grindy death metal.
Naturally, the best song of the lot is a cover of Celtic Frost’s seminal “Morbid Tales,” which is infinitely more gnashed and gashed than Tom G. Warrior even imagined. Yet the fact these lads are from Denmark doesn’t sweeten deal for Chaos Reigns, even if they are from a country that tends lean on the pristine and clean side of metal. Of course, there’s nothing remotely clean or crystalline about Chaos Reigns. It’s about as dirty as a truck stop toilet, and as nasty as those who inhibit them. That only gets you so far, mind you. - David E. Gehlke

LANGUID - A Paranoid Wretch In Society's Games. (Distort Records)
Perfectly executed D-Beat from Edmonton, Canada, a repress of their third album (originally released in 2021 by D-Takt & Rรฅpunk Records). LANGUID belong to the Swedish branch of the D-beat family, less Stoke On Trent, their sound is derived from DISFEAR, DISPENSE, DISCARD and DISCHANGE, and as such they nail it good and proper. Appropriately enough, mastered by Kenko from MEANWHILE.

DISFEAR - Everyday Slaughter
(Grind Ears Records / STORMFIRE PRODUCTIONS)
Disfear's reissue series: Everyday Slaughter, this album delivers crushing Swedish hardcore, originally released in 1997. Combining the intensity and bleak anti-war imagery of Discharge and early UK bands with the heaviness of Swedish Death Metal and Crust, it's like a sledgehammer to the walls of ignorance and oppression built by the system. A blast of raw anger and pure hardcore power.
The cassette version includes the previously unreleased track 'Another Greedy Killing' and a cover of Discharge's 'Realities Of War,' both recorded during the same session as the album at Sunlight Studios.
DISFEAR is a Swedish D-beat punk/metal band that formed in the early 1990's and recorded sporadically over the years. After releasing the albums 'Souls Scars' in 1995 and 'Everyday Slaughter' in 1997, the group did not release another album until 2003 with a 12-track album 'Misanthropic Generation', featuring vocalist Tomas Lindberg of AT THE GATES and THE GREAT DECEIVER fame and Uffe Cederlund of ENTOMBED fame. They later worked with CONVERGE's Kurt Ballou for their album 'Live The Storm'. Bassist Henke Frykman died of cancer on 25 March 2011. Tomas Lindberg has cited THE RAMONES, AC/DC, MOTร–RHEAD, THE WIPERS, THE DEAD BOYS, THE STOOGES, JERRY'S KIDS, ARTICLES OF FAITH, and UNIFORM CHOICE as a musical influences, as well as Michel Foucault as a conceptual influence, other bands mentioned as inspirational include DISCHARGE, ENTOMBED, TURBONEGRO, ZEKE and ANTI CIMEX.

APPENDIX - 1982/1983 (Mistery Records)
APPENDIX - hailed from Pori, a small town in the western coast of Finland, and although they were not as raw, fast or chaotic as most of the other Finnish hardcore bands at the time, they undoubtedly deserve their place in the Finnish 1980’s hardcore punk history. The band was formed in the winter of 1981–1982 by Vesku, Olli, and Juha. This line-up made a demo from which all four songs were released in 1982: two each on the “Pultti” comp EP and on the legendary “Russia Bombs Finland” comp LP. Of these early songs, Appendix still sounds very melodic, balancing between punk rock and hardcore. Singer Olli was a talented songwriter, and actually Juha and he had already played together in the band Yร–, which was taking a break because their guitarist was doing his military service.

SRUMZ - Slaughter parade (Visus Records)
A representation of the bitter boredom of life, the scope of stagnant monotony and the Absurd like a terrible reincarnation curse shakes the mind's reasoning. Dark, piercing guitar distortion. The string of abstract verses is a dedication to individuals who are shackled by chains that never end, making noise terrorizing the contents of an empty head. The angry voices are accompanied by dense and fast drum beats, influenced by happy pill trauma, CRUDE SS and MASS GRAVE.

MORATORY - Confrontation

PSYCH-WAR - Demo' 23
(The seat of pisses records /
Menace Records)
In Montreal, Canada, Luke is active in groups such as PARASYTES, ZYMOTIC, SNARA, CONQUEST, and WARKRUSHER, and also in Australia's BLOKADE. Before COVID-19, he came to Japan alone and showed off his strong drunken punk side with Abe from LIFE! !
I think the last group he was in Canada was WARKRUSHER, and then he went to the US without me knowing, but then the COVID-19 pandemic hit and he couldn't return to Canada and stayed there... That's how I continued to interact with him, but I heard that he recently formed a band in Philadelphia, where he is currently staying! That group is PSYCH-WAR, a five-piece twin guitar band with Luke as the guitarist! ! And here is the first demo cassette of 2023 from SORE MIND by PSYCH-WAR, who have been touring energetically and are now in full swing! I listed the groups that LUKE has been in before, but as you all know, even though he's such a drunk and useless guy, all the bands he's been in are cool (but they always quit or break up soon after, sob), which is strange about LUKE, and this PSYCH-WAR is also pretty cool! Total 5 tracks with a metallic & crashing Scandinavian Jawbreaking HC sound that definitely exudes the scent of ANTI-CIMEX from the early and mid-period of UK's SACRILEGE, and also has some influence from Japan's EXECUTE and DEATH SIDE ~ BASTARD!! Hope you keep up this momentum and release an album this time, LUKE! Also, please make a record of the ZYMOTIC demo someday!! (Revenge Records)

JALANG - Santau (Distort records)
From the Land Down Under comes a vicious D-beat stomp to the head in the form of JALANG, formerly known as LรI, the name under which the ripper Pontianak was released. With this new moniker, they are back with Santau, a feast of fast D-beat hardcore punk with obvious Swedish inclinations, as well as their own exciting twists and turns, making this an above-average LP. The eleven tracks rip through you like a knife through butter, and they deal with the realities of the modern world filtered through dysphoric eyes. I love it when punk bands retain some sense of politics, and I would say that from the name to the last beat, this is a heavily political album, having its core in gender politics. There is an awesome CONFLICT cover as well. With members and ex-members of PISSCHRIST, MASSES, and SHEER MAG, nothing less than great is expected.(MRR). Released on tape by Distort Records.

PHYSIQUE - The Rhythm Of Brutality (Distort Records)
If you aren’t already familiar with this band from their LP or 12″, they play raw, blown-out hardcore in the style of Japanese bands like FRAMTID or KRIEGSHร–G, who were in turn playing a more distorted version of the hardcore style of Swedish bands like CRUDITY and ANTI-CIMEX. Here you will revel in a thick and distorted guitar sound, but thankfully not overly distorted where the riffs are buried in a wall of feedback. The bass has a raw, chunky clunk and the drums are hammered like obstinate nails. The coarse vocals have the just the right amount of reverb on them to sound like they are being shouted at you from the bottom of a well but not from another dimension. In total, the compositions, production, and overall vibe of this release are outstanding. It doesn’t fall into any of the traps or excesses of the genre but remains finely balanced between total raw noise and something more musical. Powerful and invigorating, the intensity of the music contrasts somewhat with the lyrics’ bleak outlook. There is an underlying current of despair and misery in the lyrics while expressing the yearning to break free and rebel. As with many bands of this genre, I find the music really gets the blood pumping and forms a direct mental and emotional link to a desire to break free and run wild. But the lyrics about depression and despair keep bringing us back to what we are rebelling against rather than the freedom we are striving for. I was out of town when these guys played Minneapolis and really regret not seeing them live. - FELIX HAVOC MRR #443 • APRIL 2020

SARABANTE - Poisonous Legacy
(Distort Records)
When you think of Greek neo-crust, you think of sarabante! They were thought to have stopped performing, but before you know it, they signed with SouthernLord, and finally released their second album in 2016, their 10th anniversary!
When you think of Greece, the recent Japanese hardcore-influenced Dirty Wombs are still fresh in our memory, but saranbante and his band are from a generation older than them. Although they were formed in 2006, many of them have been active in the local scene since the late 90s, and they are one of the few bands that have a certain presence on the world stage, even among the local scene where Antimob, CUT OFF, ฮงฯ‰ฯฮฏฯ‚ ฮŸฮฏฮบฯ„ฮฟ, etc. are active. I imagine that their local crew must be very proud that they have signed with SouthernLord and are making their mark on the world.
Their last album was released in 2011, so this is their first album in five years, and they show off the evolution that only veterans can have with a sound that far surpasses their previous work. The style remains the same as the previous work, which is to race melodically, but the pop element has been greatly diminished, and the overall atmosphere is solemn, and filled with a heavy, negative air. The band has acquired their own expression in the slow progress of the local scene. It is melodic, but has an exquisite balance that exudes maturity rather than youth. It is aggressive, but also has a depth of sound that could not be expressed by initial impulse alone. This is the difference between them and young bands in the US and Western Europe, who have a fast cycle, and in that sense they are similar to both Greece and Japan. The production of the sound is not orderly, but maintains a dirty feel, and moves into new territory. An impeccable work has been born as a representative of neo-crust Greece. Enjoy D-BEAT in its 10th year. Cassette version by Distort Records.

WARKRUSHER - Armistice
(Distort Records)
Canadian powerhouse WARKRUSHER are back after their insanely great self titled Demo Tape, Pils Sessions #11 Tape and the Epitaph 7". Agipunk will release their debut LP in Europe (American press by Desolate Records) right on time for their European tour. Now, a few words about the music: I honestly think this is the perfect combination between old school stench core a la Axegrinder, Deviated Instinct, early Hellshock and early nineties Bolt Thrower. I've been shocked by the thick granitic power of this new recordings and felt my eardrums under a relentless siege that I had to listen to this damn good record over and over again for the next days. Not to talk about the artwork: simply insane with all those little details and stuff. Repress on tapes by Distort Records.

SECLUDE - Kelam terbenam
(Before Death Records)
Coming from the darkness of the death chute. SECLUDE, a death punk unit from Surabaya, will once again demonstrate its aggressiveness through their latest EP’s called "๐˜’๐˜ฆ๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ฎ ๐˜›๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ฃ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ข๐˜ฎ." It's a liturgical consonance within the realm of darkness, hatred, and the grim aspects of today's reality. This serves as a monumental dark path manifesto from Seclude, and we are proud to be a part of it!
Consult from bands like MAMMOTH GRINDER, THE SECRET, BASTARD PRIEST, GATE CREEPER, and YOUNG AND IN THE WAY, this is a different exploration from SECLUDE has previously presented. A dark and malevolent narrative will serve as the prologue and epilogue of "๐˜’๐˜ฆ๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ฎ ๐˜›๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ฃ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ข๐˜ฎ."

DOTTLAND - Martyr's Death. (Tarung Records/ Visus Records)
Our debut album titled "Martyr's Death", released by Tarung Records & Visus Records. In this dying summer, the denizens of the dead rise to the surface to celebrate an increasingly mentally brutal civilization. Eight songs of destruction with depressive melodies of these hybrid hardcore-punk monsters from Depok respond to reality. The lyrics in the Martyr's Death album dissect the stagnation of thought patterns, exploring the dynamics of humans with their narcissistic genetics that never learn from the surrounding phenomena. Which in the end this album mostly contains bullets of apathy and skepticism. "Right or left, we're all on the same crazy journey to bullshit."
